Inside the house, Stacey stood at a window that she had set to privacy mode and watched Lucas as he climbed into the aircar and left. She closed her eyes, rested her forehead on the window and swore.

TWENTY-SEVEN

The car lifted away from the Quinn residence and headed to a nearby township on the other side of the inlet. Net data showed its main purpose was to support the university and all those who attended it. Lucas had already suggested a hotel for his stay to the car's entity and it was headed there.

He considered the conversation. Stacey's comment about not being aware of Taavi's bootleg liquor and that she worked closely with him for their duration at the university just didn't gel.

An accident with Taavi? He’d accessed public records and shortly found the reference. He’d been seriously injured in a rare aircar accident some twelve years before. His injuries had been critical. He’d been put on life support and not expected to live. Ten months later, he’d been back at work, but in a limited capacity and no longer able to complete his lectures.

Doctors who’d originally treated Taavi had been amazed at his recovery, considering the extent of his injuries. Replacement limbs and organs had been developed and used for many decades, but Taavi's recovery was considered nothing short of a miracle considering the extent of his injuries and only possible considering he had pioneered recent work on artificial organs.

He checked the references from the newssheet article and noted the doctor's name who had made the comment about it being a miracle.

The car entity interrupted his musings. 'Excuse me, Mr Honey, I am being hailed by a local patrol car now coming alongside and I will have to put down. I have no choice.'

Lucas looked out the side window to scattered clouds and the inlet far below. They were approaching mountainous terrain on the other side of the inlet as another aircar pulled alongside. Yes, it was a patrol car, its windows set to privacy mode, par for the course for the usual patrol car 'wave down'.

Now what? This wasn’t something he’d been expecting.

The car slowed and descended vertically to a remote wooded location, where a small clearing became visible as it descended. He watched with mounting concern as the aircar descended to what was clearly an isolated location. They’d passed over numerous aircar parking bays they could have just as easily used.

Twenty seconds later, the car settled into a grassy rise with the patrol car landing next to him. In short order, two armed law enforcement officers bundled out, both indicating he should exit and both resting their hands on their weapons.

He got out and put his hands in the air, not wanting to take any chances. He did as they directed and turned around, spread his legs and placed both hands on the aircar, spread out.

One of the officers ran a detection device over him, which caused some consternation when it detected his Glock. One of them drew
